Prithvi Raj Chauhan: was born c. 1168 to king Someshwara Chauhan and his wife Karpurawali. He was renowned to be the sharpest among all the princes in the household. At gurukul , Prithviraj learnt shastra vidya (weaponry, armed combat), sahitya (literature), kala (arts) and rajniti shastra (politics). It was here that he learned the art of "shaabd bhedi baan vidhya" that is hittitng a target without seeing the target, that is only on the basis of sound. With the stories of Prithviraj's courage, valor and intelligence spreading far and wide, Anangpal the King of Delhi decided to make him the king of delhi instead of jai chandra. Thus he was crowned prince of Delhi at the young age of 13 years. At the age of 12, he killed Bheemdev Solanki, the king of Gujarat, who betrayed his father Someshwar Chauhan. Prithviraj Chauhan was the second last Hindu king to sit upon the throne of Delhi. He controlled much of Rajasthan and Haryana, and unified the Rajputs against Muslim invasions. His elopement with Samyukta, the daughter of Jai Chandra, the Gahadvala king of Kannauj, is a popular romantic tale in India, and is one of the subjects of the Prithviraj Raso, an epic poem composed by Prithviraj's court poet and friend, Chand Bardai. As a king, Prithvi represents the league of Rajputs best known for their bravery. Prithvi Raj is also famous for his encounters with Mohammed Ghouri. A true son of soil, Prithvi was a very responsible king who could go to any extent to safeguard his motherland, his people and their interests. Mohammed Ghori: Muhammad Shahab ud-Din Ghori, originally named Mu'izzuddin Muhammad Bin Sam but famously known as Muhammad of Ghor, was an Afghan ruler under the Ghorid dynasty. He was also the governor of Ghazni province in modern Afghanistan. Muhammad attacked the north-western regions of the Indian subcontinent many times. The first time he was defeated in the First Battle of Tarain in present-day Haryana,India by Prithviraj Chauhan. In some popular Hindu folklore woven around the bravery of Prithviraj, it is said that Ghori did not kill Prithviraj but rather blinded him. Subsequently, Prithviraj discharged a Shabdbhedi (an arrow which travels in a path created by sound waves) arrow, on being challenged by Ghori to do so. The arrow hit Ghori and subsequently he was killed. Muhammad Ghori is remembered as an empire builder and is justly called the founder of the Muslim Empire in Indo-Pakistan. Sanyogita: is the beautiful daughter of the King of Kannauj, Jaichand. She is a pampered and protected girl. Tales of her beauty had spread far. Her love for him is so strong that she defies her beloved father's wishes and chooses to run away with him. On the day of her swayamwar, she refuses to choose any of the princes present and instead openly declares her love by garlanding Prithviraj's statute kept at the door by her father. Soon, Prithviraj himself appears and they elope. This led to a rift between Delhi and Kannauj kingdoms which was taken advantage of by Sultan Muhammad Ghori of Afghanistan. The love story of Prithvi Raj Chauhan and Sanyogita was immortalized through songs and poems. Friends: Chand Bardai was the court poet of the Indian king Prithviraj III Chauhan. A native of Lahore, Chand Bardai composed the Prithviraj Raso, an epic poem in Hindi about the life of Prithviraj. A Bhat Brahman of Jagati gotra, he was the worshipper of goddess Saraswati, who gifted him with boon of Bardai. Chand Bardai was not only a court poet but was a member of the inner circle of the king. The poet accompanied the king during wars. After the second battle of Trian (now Taraori, near Karnal in Haryana state - then Punjab), the king was arrested by Muhammad Ghauri. He was put in Goar jail in Ghazni, and he was blinded. The Royal poet managed to approach his king, and chalked out a plan to finish Ghauri. He convinced Ghauri that the king was an expert in archery and he should be asked to display his skills. The stage was set. Ghauri was seated at the top to enjoy the skilful art of king Chauhan. In the meantime, the poet described the distance and direction of the seat of Ghauri, to his master in the following verse: Char Bans Chaubi Gag, ungal asat parman; Ta upar sultan hai, mat chuke Chauhan. Prithvi Raj Chauhan shot Ghauri dead. And before body guards, Mir and Khan, could slay the king and the Chand Bardai, the latter killed each other with the help of daggers. Pundir Pundir was another very close friend of Prithviraj Chauhan. He accompanied prithvi in almost all of the wars that he fought and was given the command of Lahore frontier. Arjun Arjun completes close friend circle of prithviraj Chauhan. He was very adept at disguising and playing characters. |
